TEXT

Croire que les néo-impressionnistes sont des peintres qui couvrent leurs toiles de petits points multicolores est une erreur assez répandue.

Le néo-impressionniste ne pointille pas, mais divise.

Or, diviser c'est:

S'assurer tous les bénéfices de la luminosité, de la coloration et de l'harmonie, par:

1° Le mélange optique de pigments uniquement purs (toutes les teintes du prisme et tous leurs tons);

2° La séparation des divers éléments (couleur locale, couleur d'éclairage, leurs réactions, etc.);

3° L'équilibre de ces éléments et leur proportion (selon les lois du contraste, de la dégradation et de l’irradiation);

4° Le choix d'une touche proportionnée à la dimension du tableau.

TRANSLATION

There is a widely held, erroneous belief that the Neo-Impressionists are painters who cover their canvases with multicolored dots.

The Neo—Impressionist does not paint with dots, he divides.

This dividing is a way of:

Securing all the benefits of brightness, color, and harmony by:

1.The optical mixture of uniquely pure pigments (all the hues of the prism and all their tones);

2.The separation of the diverse elements (local color, color of lighting, their reactions, etc…);

3.The balance and proportion of these elements (in accordance with the laws of contrast, gradation, and irradiation);

4.The choice of a brushstroke which fits the size of the painting.
